Good fit when
You are deciding whether to pay for a private SAT tutor, a course, or an app, and want the cost to match what your student actually needs.
Before you choose
No tutor, course, or app can promise a test-day score. Some programs, including Dolphin, offer a conditional refund if the official score does not rise by a set amount (for Dolphin, 200 SAT or 5 ACT points), so read the terms. Price and credentials matter less than whether your student uses the help every week.
What SAT prep costs
Private tutoring is the most expensive option. A 2026 pricing guide from PrivatePrep, a tutoring company, lists about $45 to $75 an hour for newer tutors, $75 to $125 for experienced independent tutors, and $125 to $300 or more for tutors through test prep companies. It reports that many families spend $1,500 to $6,000 for 20 to 30 hours. Rates vary by city, format, and the tutor’s experience.
| Option | Typical cost | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free official practice (Bluebook, Khan Academy) | Free | A starting score and the real test format | No one checks whether your student keeps going |
| SAT prep app or web platform, such as Dolphin | Free phone apps; Dolphin Web is $100 a month, $150 every 3 months, or $300 a year | Daily practice, explanations, and tracking progress | Your student still has to open it |
| Group class | Varies by provider | A fixed schedule and a teacher | The pace is set for the group, not your student |
| Private tutor | About $45 to $300 or more an hour | Stuck points, strategy, and accountability | Hours add up fast and quality varies |
When a tutor is worth the money
A tutor earns the cost when your student has a problem a person can solve faster than practice alone:
- The same mistakes keep coming back. Your student has reviewed them and still cannot explain the fix.
- They need someone to show up for. Practice only happens when another person is expecting it.
- The deadline is close and the target is specific. A few focused hours on the weakest area can matter more than broad review.
If you hire a tutor, a short package aimed at one clear goal is often a better use of money than an open-ended weekly plan.
When an app or course is enough
Many students do not need a private tutor. An app or course usually covers the need when:
- Your student is willing to practice but needs material, explanations, and a plan.
- Mistakes are spread across many topics, so volume and steady review matter more than one-on-one teaching.
- The test is two or more months away, leaving time for a daily routine to build.
- Cost matters. A year of Dolphin Web costs about what one to six hours of private tutoring does at the rates above.
A lower-cost mix: an app plus a few tutor hours
You do not have to pick only one. A common approach:
- Start free. Take an official full-length practice test in Bluebook to get a starting score.
- Practice daily with an app. Work on the skills that test showed were weakest, and review every mistake.
- Add tutoring only where it is still stuck. Book a few sessions for the specific topics practice has not fixed.
This keeps paid tutoring hours small and aimed at what actually needs a person.
How Dolphin fits
Dolphin is an independent SAT and ACT prep app. It is not affiliated with College Board.
- Free on phones. The iPhone and Android apps are free for daily practice, lessons, and explanations.
- Dolphin Web for the full study routine. As of October 2026 it costs $100 billed monthly, $150 every 3 months, or $300 a year. Eligible plans include a score improvement guarantee. See current plans and pricing.
- Your student learns in their own account, with practice, lessons, and help from Pip, Dolphin’s study assistant.
- You can follow along. A free parent account shows your student’s practice calendar, predicted score history, completed practice tests, section results, and skill map. Learn more on the parent page.
A predicted score is an estimate from practice, not an official result. Use official digital practice tests as your checkpoint.
Questions to ask any tutor before paying
- How will you measure progress? Look for official practice tests before and during tutoring, not only the tutor’s own worksheets.
- What should my student do between sessions? Most improvement comes from the practice in between.
- Are you prepared for the digital SAT? The test is taken on a computer in Bluebook and adjusts to how the student does, so older paper-test methods may not fit.
- What are the package and cancellation terms? Check whether unused hours are refunded before buying a large package.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an SAT tutor cost?
Published 2026 pricing guides list about $45 to $75 an hour for newer tutors, $75 to $125 for experienced independent tutors, and $125 to $300 or more through test prep companies. Many families spend $1,500 to $6,000 for 20 to 30 hours of tutoring.
Is an SAT prep app as good as a tutor?
For regular practice, explanations, and tracking progress, an app covers much of what a tutor does for far less money. A tutor adds a person who adjusts in real time and keeps your student accountable. A lower-cost approach is to use an app day to day and book a few tutor sessions only for problems that stay stuck.
Is Dolphin free?
The Dolphin iPhone and Android apps are free. Dolphin Web is a paid subscription: as of October 2026 it costs $100 billed monthly, $150 billed every 3 months, or $300 billed yearly. Checkout shows the exact total before you pay.
Does Dolphin have a score guarantee?
Yes, on eligible Dolphin Web Premium plans: if your student completes Dolphin's study plan and does not raise their official SAT score by at least 200 points or their ACT score by at least 5 points, you can get up to three months of Premium fees back. To qualify, their official starting score from the previous six months must be 1250 or lower on the SAT or 26 or lower on the ACT, and they must study with Premium for eight consecutive weeks, finish the assigned plan within their first 12 weeks, and take the official test within six months of subscribing. Dolphin's terms list the other requirements and deadlines.
Can I see my student's SAT progress?
Yes. Create a Dolphin parent account and invite your student. Once they accept, Progress shows their practice calendar, predicted score history, completed practice tests, section results, and skill map. Connecting accounts is free, and each student's plan is a separate purchase.
