How to Review SAT Practice Tests

A score tells you how an attempt went. Review should tell you exactly what to practice next, and how you will know that it helped.

Quick answer

What is the best way to review an SAT practice test?

Re-solve missed and uncertain questions before reading their explanations. Identify the exact reasoning error, learn or repair the missing step, and try a fresh question that tests the same skill. Keep a short error log that specifies an action, not just a topic or the correct letter.

Where do you find your Bluebook results?

After a full-length practice test, use the same College Board student account to open My Practice. It provides scored results and question review; College Board also offers tailored practice based on results. See its Bluebook practice guide and practice resources. The workflow below is Dolphin's suggested way to use that information.

Save the test identifier, section scores, and conditions that affected the attempt. Pauses, interruptions, repeated questions, or extra time outside your approved allowance limit what a comparison with another test can tell you. Do not treat a filtered question set as a full-test baseline.

Five steps

How do you review without just copying solutions?

  1. Choose the questions worth investigating. Include wrong answers, guesses that happened to be correct, and questions where you stalled. Use any notes you recorded during practice; do not invent precise timing afterward.
  2. Re-solve before opening the explanation. Cover the answer and work without the clock. Write the reason for each important step. If you already saw the answer, label the attempt as reviewed rather than treating it as independent evidence.
  3. Locate the first wrong decision. Was a rule missing, an equation modeled incorrectly, a word in the prompt ignored, or an unsupported claim accepted? Replace "careless" with an observable action, such as answering for the radius when asked for the diameter.
  4. Use the explanation to repair that decision. Compare it with your attempt. For Math, check the equation, units, restrictions, and requested quantity. For Reading and Writing, identify the evidence or grammatical rule and explain why the tempting alternative fails.
  5. Check the repair on a fresh question. Solve without hints, then revisit the skill later in a mixed set. Repeating a remembered solution is useful rehearsal but not proof that you can recognize the method independently.

Keep the useful details

What belongs in an SAT error log?

Record the test and question identifier, tested skill, your first wrong decision, a correction, and a follow-up result. These illustrative entries show the level of detail to aim for; they are not student records or quotations from a test.

Example entries: turn a mistake into a checkable next action
SkillFirst wrong decisionRepair and follow-up
Graph interceptsI reported the y-intercept when asked for an x-coordinate.Underline the requested quantity, set y to zero, and practice a fresh intercept question. Record whether I answered in the right form.
Sentence boundariesI joined two complete clauses with only a comma.Identify both subjects and finite verbs, then explain which boundary is valid in a new clause question.
EvidenceI chose a plausible statement that the passage did not support.Point to the supporting detail and rule out the overclaim in a fresh evidence question.

Do not fill a log with copied passages or "study harder." One precise sentence about the cause and one next action are more useful. If you cannot explain the correction, flag it for a lesson, teacher, or tutor instead of recording it as fixed.

Choose the next session

What does the pattern of mistakes tell you?

Wrong even without a timer

Start with instruction and worked examples on that narrow skill. Then attempt fresh practice with the explanation hidden. More timed tests will not supply a rule you have not learned.

Correct without a timer, unreliable under time

Check whether the method is fluent and whether you spent too long on other questions. Use the pacing guide to test one timing change. Familiarity with the old question can also explain the untimed success, so confirm on new material.

Correct only after seeing the solution

Explain the decisive step in your own words, then try a different question. Recognizing an explanation and producing a solution are different tasks.

When are you ready for another full test?

Choose two recurring weaknesses from the log, practice them, and check them on new mixed questions first. Use another unused official test to evaluate the next cycle under comparable conditions. College Board recommends spacing full practice tests by at least two weeks when possible. Our four-week plan puts review time between tests.

For official targeted questions, use the Student Question Bank's skill filters. Dolphin's Math and Reading and Writing pages provide additional practice paths. The full-test guide covers preparation and realistic testing conditions.

Practice-test review questions

Where do you see Bluebook practice-test answers?

After completing a scored full-length Bluebook practice test, sign in to My Practice with the same College Board student account. Review the result and the question explanations there. A short test preview is not a scored full-length practice test.

Should you review correct SAT answers too?

Review correct answers you guessed, could not justify, or took unusually long to solve. A correct choice does not show whether your reasoning was sound. Secure answers that you can explain usually need less review time.

How long should SAT practice-test review take?

There is no fixed duration. Split the work into manageable sessions and prioritize recurring errors and uncertain answers. Review is useful when it ends in a specific repair and fresh practice, not when you have copied every explanation.

Should you retake the same Bluebook test?

Re-solving old questions is useful for checking a repaired method, but remembered answers can inflate the result. Use a different unused official test for a cleaner progress check, and keep targeted study between full tests.
