Run a fair course-material trial
Use one lecture that includes an explanation, a worked example, and a diagram or table. Keep a short answer key based on the original material. Ask each candidate to help you explain the main idea and apply it to a different case.
Record three things: what it omitted, what it added without support, and what you could explain afterward. Correct-looking formatting is useful, but it should not outweigh a conceptual error.
A useful test prompt: “Explain the idea in this section, identify the part of the source you used, and give me one new question. Let me attempt it before showing the reasoning.”
This is a suggested evaluation prompt, not a guarantee that every tool supports the same interaction.
Compare the ongoing workload
Some students enjoy maintaining their own questions. Others need more help deciding what to study next. Write down the weekly work your choice leaves you: uploading new material, correcting generated content, selecting activities, and returning to old mistakes.
An alternative is worthwhile when that workload fits your habits. Saving five minutes of note formatting is less valuable if the result creates an hour of corrections before an exam.
