Best ACT prep options for your study routine

Begin with official ACT resources, then add a tool for the gap you identify. Compare on-demand instruction, a guided program, focused question practice, and Dolphin’s regular study flow. The best fit depends on your test format, available time, and need for help.

Good fit when

You have chosen the ACT and want a shortlist based on how you will prepare.

Before you choose

We have not independently measured which product improves scores most. Verify the current ACT format and each provider’s relevant offering before buying.

Published by Dolphin, one of the options discussed. This is a review of documented features and study fit, not a hands-on benchmark or a measured ranking of learning outcomes.

Start with official resources

ACT’s preparation page is the source for its official practice options. Check the current resources against your registration and the sections you plan to take. An old practice resource may not represent the same format.

Use the first practice experience to diagnose your needs. Look beyond the total score: where did time pressure appear, which questions required missing knowledge, and which wrong answers came from a rushed interpretation?

Choose the format that solves the problem

Preparation format Best reason to consider it What to check
Official practice resources Understand expectations and establish a baseline Match the current test you will take
Magoosh ACT On-demand lessons, practice, and AI help Attempt a new problem after a sample lesson
Kaplan ACT Compare course and instruction options Fit the actual weekly workload into your calendar
UWorld ACT Focused question-bank and course options Check explanations and the exact package
Dolphin study and review Evaluate a repeatable everyday routine Choose ACT in setup and complete a useful session

This is a fit-based shortlist, not an outcome ranking. Magoosh’s ACT page describes licensed official ACT questions alongside its lessons and tutor. Kaplan and UWorld have ACT-specific offerings. Inspect those current products rather than extrapolating from a company’s SAT course.

Compare your finalists with the same task

Take one recurring mistake and try an available sample from each finalist. Before receiving help, write down your reasoning. Afterward, attempt a different example and explain the corrected method without looking.

Record whether the help addressed the specific gap. Also record the work the tool left you: picking the next question, organizing notes, or deciding when to return to the topic. Those recurring tasks matter across a full preparation period.

Budget for review, not just answering

Create study appointments that include time to analyze mistakes. A plan of back-to-back tests can produce scores without much learning between them. Use the results to select a smaller set of skills to address next.

If you need help deciding between tests, read SAT vs ACT before buying separate programs for both. If a parent is supporting the plan, agree on a brief weekly review of progress and next actions.

Questions students ask

Can I prepare for the ACT for free?

Start with the free resources currently offered through ACT and other reputable providers. Purchase additional access only when you can identify a remaining preparation need.

Are SAT and ACT courses interchangeable?

No. Some content overlaps, but your preparation also needs to match the test’s questions, timing, and administration. Inspect the ACT-specific offering.

What is the best paid ACT course?

This review cannot establish a universal winner. Compare a relevant sample, the realistic workload, and the current offer for your situation.
